Seahawks’ Travis Homer Celebrates Touchdown with Attack on Titan Reference

The 73-yard fake punt touchdown run by Seattle Seahawks’ Travis Homer this past weekend has plenty of sports people talking about the skilled play, but the NFL coverage is usually missing something that otaku will notice. Upon making the touchdown, Homer stood up and did the Attack on Titan hand-to-chest salute.

If you watch this video, you’ll see him do it at 26 seconds.

His team won against the San Francisco 49ers with a score of 30-20.

Homer has already let it know that he’s an anime fan. In the Seahawks Player Q&A: 12 Things You Don’t Know About Travis Homer page on the Seahawks website, the athlete says, “I love playing video games. It’s a good way to relax after practice. That, and watching anime. I’ve always liked watching anime.”

An article with the Seattle Times also noted Homer’s interest in anime, saying he especially loves Dragon Ball Z and Naruto. He’s quoted by the Times saying, “You all are going to think I’m kidding or something but I like the physicality of Anime. You all think this is like kid’s cartoons. Nah. This is some real stuff going on here.’’

Attack on Titan is one of the most successful anime and manga series in history. Kodansha publishes the manga in America, and gave this description of it:

“A century ago, the grotesque giants known as Titans appeared and consumed all but a few thousand humans. The survivors took refuge behind giant walls. Today, the threat of the Titans is a distant memory, and a boy named Eren yearns to explore the world beyond Wall Maria. But what began as a childish dream will become an all-too-real nightmare when the Titans return and humanity is once again on the brink of extinction …

Attack on Titan is the award-winning and New York Times-bestselling series that is the manga hit of the decade! Spawning the monster hit anime TV series of the same name, Attack on Titan has become a pop culture sensation.”
